A COLD SLAB OF CREAM CHEESE in a HOT BURGER — Welcome to Okinawa A&W

COLD CREAM CHEESE on HOT PEPPERED PORK
There I was, minding my own business, when suddenly, I heard a large poster in a local A&W ROOT BEER joint calling my name.
Having just recovered from Burger King’s COLD BLUEBERRY SAUCE on a HOT HAMBURGER, I was in no mood for my culinary proclivities to be toyed with.

My first question was, who would take a perfectly good burger, topped with shavings of hot, peppered pork, followed by a large onion ring, with lettuce and tomato, and then, when perfection had been achieved, decide to enter the Twilight Zone by inserting, right into the middle of it, a THICK SLAB OF COLD CREAM CHEESE ?
My second question was, why not ???
After, all, the poster did say Big Delicious !!!, and who am I to call such fine advertising into question.
So, I ordered one on the spot, told them to cut it in half so I could fit into my mouth, and awaited my fate while sipping on a large ROOT BEER.
How nice to live in the only Prefecture of Japan where the locals actually like ROOT BEER !
Well, my 600 Yen experiment with a very nice hot burger with a cold, thick slab of PHILADELPHIA CREAM CHEESE right in the middle of it turned out better than I thought.
It was actually OK !
This is what happens when you live on Okinawa for a long time.
Give it another 30 years, and I might actually start to like NATTO.
A&W has 27 restaurants in Okinawa Prefecture — 24 of them on the main island of Okinawa, with several of them being the Drive-In type where you order from your car, and a "Car Hop" gal runs it out to you.
All of them are nice, bright, and clean, with a few hosting a BASKIN & ROBBINS ICE CREAM corner inside the store.
Unfortunately, the ROOT BEER part of the equation has kept them out of the rest of Japan. Boo Hoo.
However, for the 5 or 6 million Japanese tourists who are said to visit Okinawa each year, A&W is still something on the list to try out — ORANGE DRINK ONLY, PLEASE !!
Here’s a nice web page by a Japanese A&W fan, loaded with tons of photo of their Okinawa Menus, and shots of the food.
